News From the State

For quite some time now I have been happy to hear from members of the security profession in Texas about ideas to “raise the bar” for security professionals. The ideas and actions that have been expressed show the desire to provide the citizens of Texas with security services of high quality by dedicated and professional individuals. Also, it seems that the security profession is developing a “zero tolerance” for members who habitually break the “rules” or practice unethical behavior. These are positive things that are happening and I believe will pay dividends in the future to those who continue to look for ways to improve their services and increase their knowledge.

I want to take this opportunity to, again, request company owners and qualified managers to take an active roll in the education of their employees about the Private Security Act (Chapter 1702 Texas Occupations Code) and the Board Rules. We continue to get calls from individual registrants with questions I know could be answered by their company’s licensed manager. While we have no problem answering their questions, understand that with our present staffing situation, each telephone call takes a person away from application processing.

Another area that will have mutual benefits is to be sure your personnel that handle applications are trained in the proper manner of application submission, including the proper fee structure. An incomplete application or wrong fee will result in delays in your receiving pocket cards and greatly slows our process. The added steps to handle an incomplete application requires time that reduces the efficiency of our data entry and license techs. Taking a little extra time to review an application prior to submission can save us time and expedite our response to your applications.

There are exciting times ahead for the security profession in Texas. Participate in the many educational opportunities that are being developed. You will benefit yourself and the citizens of Texas.
