& Press Releases (continued)
Message
from ASSIST President Dan Flores
I have sad news to report on the passing of our beloved Ann Ball,
out of Houston. Ann was a giant pillar for ASSIST and she will be
missed.
Assault against a
security officer
(By Jeff Moore) – In this article, I want to share an e-mail I got
from a security officer out of state and what advice I had to offer
him. In this article, I would also like to again address the assault
law, due to some minor confusion that is still out there.
Legislative report
(By Walt Roberts) – After the general election, we will see who
the new state representatives are, which ones return and where we
need to work to make sure our businesses are safe. There are a few
issues I will bring up that will pique your interest.
Holding court in the
shadow of a drug war
(By Judge Don Minton) – A beautiful city, El Paso has been forced
to endure its status as a major hub in the network of transporting
illicit drugs. In fact, the federal government has gone so far as to
designate El Paso as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.
Personal protection
on campus
(By TX Rep. Joe Driver) – I read, with great interest, the
articles in ASSIST’s June publication written by Chief Adcox and
his assistant at the University of Texas at Houston Police
Department, entitled “A response to students carrying concealed
handguns on campus.” I welcome the opportunity to respond to the
arguments laid out against such a proposal.
The security
professional and law enforcement
(By Chief Harold Hurtt) – The Houston Police Department is
currently reviewing a proposal comparing two software systems that,
if implemented, will steer the department toward more integrated
communications between HPD and the various public law enforcement
agencies and private security companies in the area.
Private Security
Bureau
(By Capt. RenEarl Bowie) – The private security industry offers
many challenges. Some of these challenges are often found in the
management of a security company itself.
Errors and omissions
(By Josh Ring & Tina Green) – To understand the importance of
errors and omissions and the ramifications associated with the
absence of this coverage, it is necessary to understand the meaning
of “errors” and “omissions” and how they pertain to your
business.
Are full-time
security officers working private security through licensed security
required to register with DPS?
(By Carlos Peniche) – Must a full-time peace officer meeting the
qualifications of §1702.322 of the Private Security Act (PSA, also
“Act”) be registered with the Private Security Bureau if the
peace officer is providing off-duty security services through a
private security services contractor?
Hiring is a job in
itself
(By Kent Hanszen) – In this business, companies hire employees
every day for jobs involving a wide range of activities. This hiring
process should be approached in a competent and diligent manner.
Using indemnity
provisions to protect your business
(By Frank Perez) – The contracts your have with your clients are
probably the most important documents you can use to protect your
business. Those contracts should not be viewed simply as documents
that spell out your obligations to your clients (and their
obligations to you); they should be used as a tool to protect your
business.
In Tribute to Ann
Ball
(By Susan Griswold) – Ann was, without a doubt, the most selfless
person I have ever had the fortune of meeting. She will be greatly
missed as my friend as well as my colleague.
The Oakley Report
(By Keith Oakley) – ASSIST has been working closely with the
Sunset Advisory Commission staff for the past year. They recently
held hearings in Austin concerning their recommendations for DPS and
PSB. While we support the majority of the staff’s recommendations,
we did suggest some changes.
IN THE NEWS
Security and ATMs; Sierra Providence to host El Paso LEAPS meetings;
Rep. Joe Driver discusses Computer Repair in Private Security Act;
Workers comp purchasing group vital.
Building a better
security officer - Part Three
(By Mark Smith) – Now that the desired officer is hired, the best
long-term employment relationships focus just as much on what the
security officer wants from the job. Experience with many hundreds
of longtime employees has brought me to the following conclusions.
LEAPS Houston
In May, we had as our guest speaker Ernesto Rojas with Forensic and
Security Services. Mr. Rojas discussed their services and all the
different types of electronic devices they are able to extract data
from.
LEAPS Dallas
The Dallas LEAPS organization just co-hosted the Law Enforcement and
Security Symposium. This is one of the most successful functions we
hold in Dallas each year.
LEAPS El Paso
What is going on in El Paso that makes it so safe? Well, good
neighborhoods and good communication between the El Paso Police
Department and the public, but in the middle of it all is LEAPS.
ASSIST Convention
2008
(By Kevin Galloway) – Our 2008 annual convention is almost upon
us! The Gulf Coast Region is hosting this spectacular event, and has
put together quite a show for all!
The Last Word
(By Dan Flores) – As stated earlier, ASSIST wants the security
profession to remain professional, and with the assistance of DPS we
can certainly accomplish these goals.
