Message from ASSIST President
Dan Flores
Greetings to all ASSIST members, as many of you are aware we are in the legislative mode at this time. ASSIST is making sure that we watch bills that could adversely have a negative impact on our profession.
By the same token, we have forwarded several bills to our state legislators that would improve our profession.
Representative Lucio is sponsoring our lien law bill
#HB1846. It was laid out to a committee and we had several members of ASSIST testify on its behalf. At the time, we had no opposition. But we still need every member to call your state legislator and remind them that we do need their assistance in order to get the bill passed into law.
We still have other very important bills that will be explained further by our
very own resident expert, Walt Roberts. See Walt’s articles to get the latest on legislative matters.
I want ASSIST members to know that I have established members’ audience via e-mail. What this means is that if a member wants to discuss an ASSIST item with the board, all they have to do is submit it via e-mail to me and I will take it to the board for discussion.
I know it is very hard for a member to travel to Austin every quarter to be at our state meeting. I will also start sending you our agenda once it is in the final draft. I want to make sure every ASSIST member is aware of what your board is doing for you.
Now, to the elections for state officers. Every position is open at this
time. Members have until Aug. 1 to mail or e-mail nominations to our nominations committee, chaired by Lorenzo Sosa from El Paso. The committee members are Donna Sher from Dallas and Jim Shrider from the Houston area. Please keep in mind that you can nominate a member from the floor at the convention with the exception of the office of president. So I ask all ASSIST members to get involved and attend our convention.
Convention time is coming Sept. 30 through Oct. 3 at the Omni Hotel in Austin, Texas. Alan Treviño, our regional president for Austin, is working very hard to give us the best convention ever. He has informed us that our speaker and instructors have already been selected. Please register early and book your hotel room. If you wait until the last minute you’re going to pay a higher rate. Please keep track of convention updates through our website.
Finally, I want to pass on to each one of you information on the Ann Ball Above and Beyond Award. As many of you are aware, Ann Ball was a lifetime member of ASSIST and dedicated every moment of her life to ASSIST and this program. The program will be placed on our website for your viewing. I encourage each business owner to take time to read and learn about the award. It will encourage security officers to conduct themselves in a professional manner and at the same time be rewarded and recognized for their hard work.
Than you again for your support and look forward to seeing you at the
convention.
