LEAPS
Dallas
By Walt Roberts
Chairman
The Dallas LEAPS organization just co-hosted the Law Enforcement and Security Symposium. This is one of the most successful functions we hold in Dallas each year. Along with ASSIST and the Hotel and Motel Association, we receive attention from the entire Dallas security community.
This year, there were some new additions. Worth Casualty Company hosted the entire event, allowing us to give the entire proceeds of more than $5,000 to the ASSIST Fallen Officer Fund. LEAPS Coordinator Keith Allen announced he would go to any company office or location to provide workshops. DPD and PSTN are working hard on the video presentation of these classes, providing them to LEAPS members at no charge. This means a designated person in your firm may be approved to instruct LEAPS training. Additionally, we gave awards for security officers who have went above and beyond. We recognized Howard Ford and Brad Helms for their hard work and dedication.
It was good to hear from Valarie Fulmer; she is always informative, and is one of our champions with DPS. Michael Kelly briefed us on procedures in choosing a new commander for the department and the Sunset Commission’s reporting requirements to the legislature. Sgt. Douglas Whitworth, our ranking investigator in North Texas, gave a brief overview of what’s going on in our area and the department’s relationship with DPD, and made it clear that the bureau’s mission is getting the unlicensed operators out of the business sector.
The executive board has met and we are pushing membership and working toward, and have most likely completed at this printing, the ability to join on the Web through the PayPal network. Lisa George is working hard to that end. As you may have seen, LEAPS was a sponsor at the North Texas Chapter of ASSIST LEAN event held in Dallas last month.
If you missed the symposium, see you next year! This event is opened to all law enforcement agencies and the security profession.
