 Message from ASSIST President

Greetings to all ASSIST members, security officers and investigators of the State of Texas.
I have wonderful news to pass on since our last board meeting. It is going to be my intent to keep you informed of what is happening at our board meetings.
We had to postpone our proposed training guidelines presentation to DPS due to a minor change in the actual lineup. I will be submitting again the proposed guidelines to DPS / PSB for final approval at our June 26, 2008 board meeting.
The board was also instrumental in raising the Add insurance from $10,000.00 to $20,000.00 for only an additional $2.00. This is unbelievable what volume can do to keep our cost down. I want to thank V.P. Jeff Moore for making this great benefit happen.
We are also still in the process of getting our 5013(c) exemption for our Fallen Officer’s Fund. This is one critical step because it allows us to accept donations tax free from any potential donor.
On March 18, I traveled to Houston to meet the Houston Region executive committee for the convention. Let me share briefly that Houston has a great show lined up for us. We are going to experience something different this year. Mark your calendars October 1st through 4th. Also the registration form is on the web so you can register early. Please contact our regional president, Kevin Galloway, in Houston for any questions.
I had the distinct honor of attending the ASSIST regional meeting in El Paso, Texas on March 26. What a well organized group. Regional president Jessie Ruelas had a great program set up and the audience was a huge one. I was so impressed.
Part of my trip to El Paso was to transfer membership services to Brownsville. I am pleased to inform you that on 05/01/08 membership services was transferred. You may call JoAnn Campos at (956) 542-8256 for any questions or concerns in regards to ASSIST. Campos is a senior employee at my firm and has been authorized to receive any calls when it pertains to ASSIST. You can reach her Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
At this time I want to take the time to thank State Representative Pat Haggerty for his years of public service to the great state of Texas. As some of you may know, Representative Haggerty lost his bid for re-election in El Paso, Texas.
I want every member to know that he is a true champion for ASSIST. Without Representative Haggerty’s help we would not have been able to pass any of the laws that have helped security officers in the State of Texas. One thing I will share with each member and security officer is Representative Haggerty’s genuine commitment to continue to assist our profession. I know we will see him again soon.
