LEAPS Dallas

LEAPS Dallas held a general meeting July 18 at the Dallas Police Department Headquarters.

Our speaker was Lt. Anthony Williams, commander of the Dallas Police Helicopter Unit. Williams discussed the positives of the new helicopters versus what they can do that the prior helicopters could not. His presentation was very informative regarding specifications for helicopter purchase, the type of cost affiliated with helicopters and the positives in law enforcement that can be achieved.

Williams also discussed the different types of equipment that can be utilized from a helicopter to assist officers on the ground, the professionalism of his pilots and the new safety features of each unit.

Kevin Thomas, treasurer from 2002-2006, was honored for his years of service to LEAPS. Thomas is the regional director of security for Intercontinental Hotels. He is still a very active member, and we expect him to return to the executive board at a later date. He was joined by his wife, Stephanie.

Deputy Chief Brian Harvey, LEAPS liaison, has taken a new assignment within the Dallas Police Department and will be moving from the Central Patrol Division to the Police Headquarters buildings. He will be involved with operation disruption, crime analysis, police technology, ICPCU and the development of DPD’s new Fusion Center.

Along with Harvey, Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse and Officer Keith Allen, our LEAPS coordinator, were in attendance.

Deputy Chief Golbeck, the new commander of the Central Patrol Division, also attended the LEAPS meeting. He is a long-time friend to LEAPS and we value his support in our program.

Brig. Gen. John Sampfli attended our quarterly meeting and joined LEAPS. Sampfli still has a number of Army responsibilities, but is a volunteer working with DPD on crime prevention.

The Dallas Police Department is very fortunate to have a number of loyal volunteers who commit their time to community involvement and contribute to the crime reduction. This loyalty is achieved due to the openness of the department to private security and the Dallas citizens.

LEAPS was very saddened with the loss of Officer Wes Hardy with the Plano Police Department. Hardy was killed in a motorcycle accident while making a traffic stop.

As always, we look forward to working with each of you in an even better-trained and educated environment for 2007. Feel free to contact any member of the board to answer any questions. Our LEAPS Web site (www.leaps.us) will automatically take you to our individual e-mails and phone numbers.
